Syed Nadzri on Tuesday: Seeing more into ...

THE return of Yin the lost little boy that made Sunday headlines capped what would have otherwise been a very depressing week concerning children.

The gloom had already built up quite considerably earlier and by the time we read about the "Street kids of Johor Baru" in this paper on Friday, it was as if only to sustain a miserable stretch of heart-rending situations.

Before that, there was the sad case of Donny John Dion, an 11-year-old boy from a poor family in rural Sabah who took his life after being teased and tormented by classmates.

Then Dally the little Myanmar girl was brutally murdered, her body dumped in Kampung Pandan, Kuala Lumpur.

And two days ago, 4-year-old Adam Zaqwan Ahmad fell to his death from the third floor of an apartment block in Sungai Buloh after a playful prance on a discarded chair on the balcony.

UK small caps close lower, Chaco Resources

LONDON (Thomson Financial) - UK small caps closed lower, in line with a cautious mood among blue chip stocks, with Chaco Resources still bearing the brunt of news that it plans to plug and abandon a well, dealers said.

By the close, the FTSE Small Cap index was 2.3 adrift at 4,079.1, while the FTSE 100 index finished 7.1 lower at 6,479.7.

On the downside, a disappointing drilling update clipped 1-1/2 pence from Chaco Resources, closing at 7. The group will plug and abandon the Sayona-1 well in Colombia's Llanos basin, not having found commercial quantities of hydrocarbons there during drilling.

Chaco, which has a 55 pct interest in the well, said the lack of commercial hydrocarbons could be due to an insufficient source charge or hydrodynamic flushing of the reservoirs by formation water.

House appropriation bills debated Tuesday

While the agriculture and veterans package passed relatively quickly, the environment and energy bill heard a myriad of amendments by both Democrats and Republicans, who aired out issues such as minnow farming and nuclear waste casks in Monticello. Both bills include Range sponsored provisions, including studies of two new energy proposals, timber contract down payment refunds, and wetland studies for counties with 80 percent or more of pre-settlement wetlands.

The omnibus agriculture, rural economies and veterans affairs finance bill is a squeaky $700,000 more than the governors budget, and the least controversial bill, according to both bill sponsor Rep. Al Juhnke, DFL-Willmar, and Rep. Marty Seifert, R-Marshall.

This bill at this time does not pick winners and losers, said Juhnke.

Surfing for Simplicity

RISMEDIA, April 10, 2007-"Moving is a hassle," explains Amir Ahmed, president of Homes.org. "We asked ourselves how we can make it simple."

And that's exactly how Homes.org came to be. In February, the one-stop-shop general consumer and new mover Web site launched, with consumer ease and cost-cutting as top priorities. Homes.org aids a more simple transition through relationships with Realtors, moving and utility vendors, and various other service providers.

A win-win opportunity, Homes.org proves to be requisite for both homeowners and partners of the site, says Ahmed. Between the site and skilled employees stationed at a high-end sales and customer service center, homeowners are offered the convenience, cost savings, time, and reduced stress of one call or click that handles all relocating concerns.

Anti-Britney: The New Look

The idea came to Chelsea Rippy when she found herself surrounded by low-rise jeans and short shirts. Nicole Thomas thought of it when she was shopping for a wedding dress and found two options: strapless or frumpy. Tedd Doucette got the idea when he and his wife couldn't find any clothes they considered appropriate for their five daughters.

The Decline and Fall of the MP3 Format

Under normal circumstances, it's very hard to dislodge a common file format. Now, there is a fair chance that the other music majors will follow EMI in offering DRM-free options to iTunes and other online music stores. This would allow them to revert to MP3, which already has a wide market with DRM-free sales. However, the legal threats against MP3 may change their minds. If so, AAC will benefit.

Online Book Sales Increasing…

As per a report in the Hindu, sales of books online have increased in India: Oxford Bookstore claims that online sales via its site are almost doubling every year. Apparently, a book sells every 18 minutes on eBay India. Landmark, which has a tie-up with Sify, is working on its own portal. Orient Longman has a tie-up with Indiaplaza. To be honest, I've never purchased a book online (I enjoy the process of looking over a stack of books almost as much as reading), but I know a few people who do. Reliability of the service and speed of delivery remain key differentiators, and they don't mind paying the extra buck for an assured delivery. The other thing is, people tend to compare prices across online retailers, even if they end up buying from a retailer that they're used to. Still, I wonder if there's a model there for a comparative shopping portal, focused largely on Indian publishers.

Search Engine Optimization: Reindexing

What can you do to get your website up to the top of the URL (Universal Resource Locator) lists, so that when people type a search term into a search engine, such as cheap ghost writer, they will get to see your business name somewhere on the first page results? Well, mainly its a problem related to the search engine bots (robots) and spiders or crawlers going over your site repeatedly, noticing changes in it, and reindexing your website.

To reindex your site means that the search engines are sending out their little machines to go over your site and notice any changes in it. They are generally looking for major changes, such as fresh content, major rearrangements to your site, and brand new pages.

If you add new pages to your website, Google Sitemaps may be a program which could provide you with some help when it comes to reindexing at least the sitemap for your site.
