Papers leery of online deals Old-style media can't see how Google ...

When asked why the newspaper industry is so nervous -- some say paranoid -- about Yahoo and Google, Tom Curley, the chief executive of The Associated Press, is quick with a reason.

Just last week, he said, he had minor clashes with both Yahoo Inc. and Google Inc. over how they have been using his news stories.

In one of those incidents, AP noticed that its sports "content" was showing up on mobile devices through a channel AP hadn't been made aware of.

When confronted, executives at Yahoo or Google -- Curley wouldn't say which -- explained that they hadn't mentioned the distribution deal because it wasn't necessarily long-term, and it wasn't even clear if it would work.

AP demanded, and got, "a little extra payment" for the extra usage of its content, Curley said.

Savvy Shopper: New Gap designs on display and online

The Gap plans to jump on the designer bandwagon this week by launching limited-edition women's clothing available to shoppers online and at its flagship stores. Shoppers at Friendly Center, Four Seasons Town Centre and Hanes Mall won't see the designer styles. If you want to try them on in person, the Gap will offer these short-term collections at the Streets at Southpoint in Durham. Can't make the trip? You can still shop the collections, which become available Tuesday, at www.gap.com. The Gap, owned by the parent company of Banana Republic and Old Navy, has faced financial struggles in recent years while searching for an image more interesting than white T-shirts and khaki pants. Now, the classic clothier seems to be taking a cue from retailers such as H&M and Target, whose limited-edition lines have made waves with shoppers and sailed off shelves.
