Six Pack: Find the Right Site Search
For the online retailer, few things are more important than your site search functions. Customers use it to find products, naturally, browse as they shop and to find add-on and similar products as well. An effective site search is necessary, but it will also enhance an online shopper's experience, and in return, potentially boost your sales and tell you more about how customers use your Web site. According to a recent study by Aberdeen Group, a Web site search is the minimum competitive requirement for online commerce. In fact, the research firm says that 59 percent of the e-commerce Web sites it surveyed currently have a search tool in place and over the next two years that number is expected to jump to 96 percent. Much like Internet search engines, e-commerce-based search engines all offer a different combination of search options, results displays, organization formats and other options.

Reinventing the way we eat
EDMONTON - So here's the question: In this toxic fast-food age and a whacky global economy where Caribbean mangoes are shipped to snowbound Canadians all winter long, is it still possible to live off the land that surrounds us? Alisa Smith and James MacKinnon are vital, healthy proof that it is, give or take a few lost pounds and a nagging cold Smith was nursing when the couple visited Edmonton this week. Smith and MacKinnon were here as part of a national promotional tour for their new book, The 100-Mile Diet (Random House Canada, $32.95), an account of their year-long attempt to consume only foods and beverages produced with a 100-mile radius of their walk-up apartment in the Kitsilano neighbourhood of Vancouver. The idea sprang from a gut feeling MacKinnon had one day back in early 2005 that the world had "gone sideways," an anxious moment reinforced by a single ugly statistic from World Watch -- that the food we now eat in the average North American meal typically travels between 2,500 and 4,000 kilometres from farm to plate.
