To end a romance, just press 'send'
It was the middle of a workday two weeks ago, and Larry was deep into a meeting when a text-message began scrolling across his cellphone screen. He glanced at it and thought: "You can't be serious." It was no joke. His girlfriend was breaking up with him . . . again. And she was doing it by e-mail . . . again. For the sixth time in eight months, she had ended their relationship electronically rather than face-to-face. He had sensed trouble -- he had been opening his e-mail with trepidation for weeks -- so the previous day he had suggested that they meet in person to talk things over. But she nixed that, instead choosing to send the latest in what Larry had begun to consider part of a virtual genre: "the goodbye e-mail." Understandably, he'd like to say his own goodbye to that genre.

Round the Rancho: Out of the Bleu.
Typically this column covers Rancho businesses only. But when a couple of Rancho moms with lots of enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit open a children's shop/gift boutique in Foothill Ranch—well, that's enough reason to hop on the 241 and check it out! And although Out of the Bleu has been open only a few weeks, it already has generated both buzz and business for owners Janean Linder and Tina MacFarlane. Location, of course, is helpful, especially when you're adjacent the popular Inka Mama restaurant and the always busy JoAnn's. And, as mentioned, enthusiasm and spirit are a huge part of the quotient. Still, we all know of businesses that have had these qualities and sadly haven't made it. One look at Out of the Bleu, however, and the phrase "no worries" comes to mind.
Graduation bash gets A+ from parents
She and husband, Jeff, are participating for the first time in Project Graduation - the annual parent-organized, all-night celebration that follows Mattoon High School commencement ceremonies. And it likely won't be the Storms' last time helping with Project Graduation, if history is any indication.Parents who are Project Graduation veterans said the fete isn't just about providing their kids a safe, substance-free place to party. Rather, it's almost a rite of passage for moms and dads who are transitioning from roles as primary caregivers to secondary safety nets, from executives to advisers, from parents of teenagers to parents of adults."It's just the final hurrah," said Jane Mann, chairwoman of this year's Project Graduation, which will be May 25 at Lake Land College.Mann previously helped with Project Graduation in 1996, when her eldest son, Jay, received his diploma from Mattoon High School.
