Print Catalogs Rule
Send a catalog and the recipient is twice as likely to make a purchase at the retailer's Website. Soon-to-be released survey results from the 2006 holiday shopping season reveal that the mail-Internet media combination is even more powerful than four years ago. Some 47% of online retail shoppers say they used a company's catalog to assist them. Catalogs also are driving additional online shopping trips, with 69% of online shoppers making multiple visits to a company's Website. The purchase rate increase was most dramatic among new consumers: 260% higher for catalog recipients vs. non-recipients, reports Greg Whiteman, U.S. Postal Service manager of market research. Among existing customers, the purchase rate was 67% higher for catalog recipients. The updated research was conducted by the USPS in association with comScore Networks, which says during the first 45 days of the 2006 holiday season, total online spending reached $19.48 billion, up 25% over 2005.
.Back up your files online Digital music
The most painless backup option for music is somewhat old-school, since it doesn't involve a snazzy new online service: just use the original CDs. But if you'd rather avoid the painstaking task of re-ripping each and every CD when your PC kicks the bucket, your portable music player can come to the rescue. Make sure that any player you buy is large enough to store your entire music collection, with some room for growth. Storage space is getting cheaper for PCs and portable devices alike, so a number of choices for players can fit the bill. Aside from the ubiquitous iPod (available in 30GB and 80GB versions), Creative's 60GB Zen Vision:M and Microsoft's 30GB Zune (which, incidentally, is still not available in Canada) are also good buys. With an iPod and iTunes, your bail-out procedure is simply to reinstall iTunes and reconnect your iPod, and then follow the prompt to restore your music from your iPod.

Can Web 2.0 Ruin Online Marketing?
CrownPeak Technology's VP of marketing and product strategy reviews some important Web 2.0 capabilities and offers safety tips to help you decide when and how to deploy them. I think we can all agree that, at this point, the term "Web 2.0" is overhyped. In fact, in my earlier "2007 Predictions" article for iMedia Connection, I said this would be the year that it jumped the shark. I haven't seen this much hype since the last time Brad and Angelina decided to adopt. As digital marketers, we're being told that we need to (by tomorrow COB) develop a blog, produce podcasts, provide mechanisms to rate our content, accept user comments and create the new mashup of digg/YouTube/del.icio.us and wrap it all in Ajax. And, these days, we can be in such a hurry to implement these new technologies that we forget the fact that they should actually serve some function.
