Purchasing meds online can make you sick

Remember in the old days when you had to go to the drug store or doctor's office to pick up that needed prescription - maybe it was a long drive, - and you felt lousy?

Then along came the Internet and the ability to purchase prescription drugs without getting out of that comfy chair or wasting gas driving in traffic.

But there are several things to keep in mind before purchasing prescription drugs on the Net.

Not all Web sites sell safe medicine, which poses a threat to your health and well being. In many cases, sorting out the good online operations from the bad can be tough, and so can telling the good pills from the bogus pills.

Fortunately, I'm here to hold your hand.

You're welcome, and donations are happily accepted.

Putting on the Ritz

NO LONGER is takeaway limited to pizza and Chinese. An explosion of heat-and-eat meals means we can serve up everything from restaurant-quality cuisine to a home-comfort casserole.

113 King William Rd, Hyde Park. Ph: 8373 3114. Open: Mon-Fri, 8.30am-4pm.

One of the new kids on the block, caterer Napier Gryst sold his business and opened a shop in the heart of gourmet food territory, Hyde Park.

Napier does a brisk trade in corporate catering as well as the heat and eats. "They've gone much better than I imagined," he says. "I get people looking for a one-person meal to those wanting to feed the family."

Napier's affordable range has grown from a few dishes to 15 since opening last August and is sold by package size. All meals are displayed in a glass cabinet and can be bought in a small serving (about 600g) for $8.90, medium (about 1kg) for $15.90 and large $26.50.

Virtually addicting

For a stuffed bulldog, Calvin has it pretty good. He lives a full, if virtual, life online and has a pad decked out to his tastes, which run sort of froggy style, says owner and decorator Jake Reynolds, a 9-year-old from Forest Hill, Md.

Six months ago, the third-grader got sucked into Calvin's world and hasn't left it since. He can't. Once Jake used the secret code that came with his store-bought bulldog to create an online version at Webkinz.com, he committed to feeding and shopping for the pup regularly while interacting with other kids and their virtual pets on the Internet.

"You have to play it mostly every two days or every day, because if you don't then their health meter goes all the way down and they'll get sick," Jake says matter-of-factly. "I do it just about every day because I just really, really like it."

Webkinz.com is one of a growing number of social-networking sites aimed at pre-teens, many of whom have watched older siblings interact online and want some of the action for themselves.
