DVD timeline

DVD's official launch occurred 10 years ago, but its development spans two decades. Here's a look at some of the key events that led to disc dominance:

1986
Believing that movies stored on a 5-inch, CD-like format and priced under 20 bucks would entice consumers to buy instead of rent them, Warner Home Video topper Warren Lieberfarb urges Japanese consumer electronics makers to develop such an optical disc technology.

1992
A partnership with CD pioneer Philips fails to produce a new format, so Lieberfarb and Warner team with Toshiba to develop better video compression and storage technologies. The new disc-based format is code-named "Taz," after Warner's iconic Tasmanian Devil character. Media parent Time Warner is soon granted 10 patents on it.

1993
Toshiba and Warner invite Philips -- owner of a number of key optical disc patents -- to help further develop their new format.

ChannelNet Announces New Alliances to Expand Its Industry-Leading ...

DETROIT -- ChannelNet, a leading provider of Web based solutions for the automotive retail industry, announced today the launch of its next-generation online inventory services, a part of its eRetailAdvantage (eRA) program for automotive dealers.

In conjunction with the launch, ChannelNet also announced it has entered into contracts with Digital Motor Works (DMi), the largest provider of automotive retail data in the US and Canada, and with eVox Productions, the premier source for automotive imaging, to provide the data and images for the expanded online inventory system.

Online inventory is the most critical component of a dealers Web presence, said Paula Tompkins, CEO and founder of ChannelNet. Our eRA online inventory module provides potential buyers with an intuitive and compelling way to see the vehicles actually available - and that experience drives the sale.

Warm welcome home for Conn. troops

(Windsor Locks-WTNH) _ Members of the 102nd Infantry Battalion of New Haven returned home Saturday after a one-year tour in Afghanistan.

Grandmother Lenor Rodriguez was waiting for her son and her grandson, Luis and Joshua Amaro. They are possibly the first father to follow son into service since the Civil War.

"I'm just thankful to God that they're here. They had a victory," said Lenor.

The Amaro's struggled to look out the plane's small window to see their large and proud family.

"We were sitting next to each other on the plane just looking," said Luis.

One father is absent to hug his son and the rest of his family. Staff Sergeant Joseph Phaenuf was killed in action in December.

"His efforts did not go forgotten, he paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Tim Colbeck, VP Sales, Subaru of America: Two Reveals in New York ...

A few weeks ago when looking over the advance press schedule for the New York International Automobile Show, thought Id caught a typo. Subaru was going to hold two press conferences, one each day for the two day event.

Thats odd. Interesting buzz about the company founded by Malcom Bricklin was being heard from various auto writers that need confirmation. Now, I dont mean to be critical or negative, but two press events? What could be that crucial to Subaru?

The mystery was solved when I attended both presentations: one complete refresh and two new vehicles. The powers that be at NYIAS only allow for a 20-minute conference. Pitching three vehicles in such a short time is difficult, if not impossible.

Both were impressive reveals and indicated a company with plans that were not timid.

Natural Skin Care Products based on Minerals and Herbs Gaining ...

The beauty and wellness industry has seen steady growth for decades. New means of sales and distribution have aided in this growth and the single biggest contributor to this has been the Internet. Because manufacturers can reach the world market from almost anywhere with a computer, products that have been exclusively available in only certain regions are now easy to find with a keystroke and click of the mouse. Recently, a massive surge has been seen in natural skin care products that were previously only available in the Middle East, but are now being sold online and with promotional offers that you won't find at any shopping mall.

(PRWeb) April 11, 2007 -- The beauty and wellness industry has seen steady growth for decades. New means of sales and distribution have aided in this growth and the single biggest contributor to this has been the Internet.

Why and Where to Find Women Online

Anybody remember the song "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves," a duet by Aretha Franklin and the Eurythmics? Released in 1985, the song was considered a modern feminist anthem. While its strident vocals and hard-pounding beat may seem outdated, its message is perfect to describe the state of online shopping today: when it comes to shopping and buying online, women are blazing the trail and doing it for themselves. An article by Debra Aho Williamson in the April 2005 issue of iMedia drives this point home: "The ratio of females to males in the general population is expected to hold steady at least through 2008, but that won't be the case on the internet. Cultural, societal and internet business trends are combining to shift the balance more firmly toward women."

So what about in the automotive industry? Are we really seeing more women researching, shopping, and buying vehicles online? The answer is yes, and the industry is beginning to take notice.

Rethink Your Relationship to Work: Ideas from The 4-Hour Work Week

Count me as skeptical of Tim Ferriss and his book The 4-Hour Workweek. A self-described serial entrepreneur, Ferriss' ventures include the BrainQUICKEN nutritional supplement sold online ("a lab-tested performance product scientifically engineered to quickly increase the speed of neural transmission and information processing").

His book's subtitle "Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich" makes me think he's trying to get rich by the age-old technique of selling get-rich-quick books. I fully expect to see Ferriss join the ranks of motivational infomercial giants like Tony Robbins and Carleton Sheets one day.

Yet there's something appealing about the ideas he outlines, though his approach goes against my more sober and conservative instincts. His suggestions align well with the burst culture of work enabled by the Web, where output matters but where, when, and how much you work doesn't.
