Kay Barnes the architect of a new KC
While the tall cranes and bulldozers are readily evident, people who worked with Barnes said that much of her contribution to the city's progress took place out of the public eye. Downtown's revival now seems as if it happened rather quickly and easily over the last three years — after 30 years of decline and failure. But key players said Barnes planted the seeds for success years earlier and worked constantly behind the scenes to keep things from falling apart. "In any one of these projects, there were numerous occasions, including with the H&R Block headquarters, when it would have been very easy to say, 'This just isn't going to work. Let's give up,' " said Herb Kohn, a lawyer who helped negotiate some of the pivotal downtown projects. "She was the one who never let us do that." Barnes' story is one of persistence and optimism that was sometimes, by her own admission, a bit delusional — an absolute refusal to submit to difficulties or negativity or criticism of her sometimes plodding leadership style.
A town hits paydirt
Many workers earn more than $100,000 a year, have pay TV and get six days straight off work. So what is it really like in a remote Western Australian mining boom town? David Cohen reports on life in Tom Price. It's a five-hour drive to the nearest port, but there are dozens of boats in town. There are no brothels, four-wheel-drives rule the roads and the post office in this middle-of-nowhere place is one of the busiest in Australia. Welcome to Tom Price, population 5000, a resources boom town in Western Australia in one of the most affluent non-metropolitan regions in the nation, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. It's very different to the Victorian goldfields of the 1850s, when Main Road and Esmond Street in Ballarat were lined with brothels.
Foreign language books a Precious commodity
The family owned foreign language bookstore My Precious Language opened its doors six months ago and has already added many new languages to its book selection. My Precious Language in Phoenix has 1,200 books in 13 languages including French, Spanish, German, Russian, Polish and their most recent addition, Japanese. "We are a specialty bookstore that is trying to tailor to the customer," said Tony Wisowaty, who like his wife, Rita Wisowaty, always wanted to own a bookstore. .
Elmore, Autauga counties growing in retail
As long as Millbrook Mayor Al Kelley can remember, many residents of his city have made the short drive to Prattville to shop. That could change soon -- at least for a while. A Wal-Mart Supercenter is set to open in Millbrook in midsummer. Marvin's opened a hardware store last year and officials are working to lure a Lowe's Home Improvement Center to the city. Kelley jokes that Prattville residents will soon flock to his city to shop. "It's been the other way around for so long, I like to kid (Mayor) Jim (Byard) that's it's our turn now," he said. "We have seen tremendous retail growth, and it has taken several years for us to get to this point. Prattville gets most of the ink, but we're growing over here, too." Byard understands retail growth in Elmore County, especially the new Wal-Mart location, will draw tax dollars away from his city.
