Your Views: More on the US gun control debate
There has been considerable invective visited upon New Zealanders by American folk on this forum. Less than 10 per cent of Americans have passports. The majority of New Zealanders have travelled. We have a different perspective on world affairs because we are a small nation - and therefore tend look constantly beyond our own borders. What is out there is not pretty. Nor is a lot of what happens here. Insecurity and a questioning disposition tend to result in a more balanced world view. I am pleased that most of the world don't appear to know much about us including our location. Tragedy is part and parcel of everyone's life. It is not exclusive to Americans. This event was a tragedy - but has been blown totally out of perspective. For example more than 30,000 people in third world countries die from rabies every year vs one every two years in the USA.
Going green on Queen
They stroll down Queen St. W. and may look like any other scenester, but there is something about them that is undetectable to the naked eye. They are greensters: young, hip and eco-conscious fashionistas who wear organic, local, sustainable and vintage clothing – the twist is that their look is more Queen than green. They invest in local pieces made of organic cotton, bamboo, soy, lyocell, hemp blends and wild silk, but Greensters refuse to sacrifice style for substance. In fact, they scoff at the idea that eco-fashion means Birkenstocks and potato sacks, proving that eco-clothing can be fashion forward, too. But perhaps what is most fashion forward about greensters is that they aren't just thinking about the future of fashion, they are thinking about the future of the Earth.
Say 'Hola' to bilingual children's toys
Odra Heitmann hauled the heavy package labeled "Dora's Talking Kitchen'' off a Toys R Us shelf and set it on the floor for a better look. Splashed on the box was a promo: "Says Phrases in English and Spanish!'' That sealed the deal for Heitmann, who scooped up the gift for her 1-year-old niece Ashley. "I made a big mistake by not teaching my kids Spanish," said Heitmann, 37, recently at the Burbank, Calif., store. "I'm not going to make the same mistake with my niece." Say hello and hola to the latest fad - bilingual toys. Spurred by a growing immigrant population in the United States and a push to teach children foreign languages at an earlier age, toymakers and consumers are going bilingual. Spanish-English bilingual toys have become especially popular in the last few years, thanks in part to Fisher-Price's wildly successful "Dora the Explorer" product line, based on the Nickelodeon cartoon about Dora Marquez, a 7-year-old bilingual Hispanic girl.
The Corner Store in the Global Community
The director of You've Got Mail set out to highlight the small town community feel of the Upper West Side of NYC. In the movie, Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) is the owner of a small corner bookstore, The Shop Around the Corner, that was passed down to her from her mother. She is part of her community and knows and cares about her patrons. She can recommend relevant books as well as discuss personal issues with her clients. The Shop Around the Corner is threatened by the mega store that opens around the corner, Fox Books. And here is where I give away the ending, (so if you have not seen the movie, skip this part). In the end Fox Books is able to offer more choices and lower prices thus putting The Shop Around the Corner out of business. However, all is not lost for Kathleen Kelly because Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) recognizes how valuable Katleen's insights and relationships are to good business and the two merge.
JUDIE & EVELINDA: Jewelry and jobs
Style Matters: We love jewelry and always have had a secret desire to work at a big time jewelry store. We decided to live vicariously through 25-year-old Jaime Miller, a girl who snagged a job at Harry Winston right out of college. Harry Winston, the man who once said "People will stare. Make it worth their while," is best known for once owning the notorious and supposedly cursed Hope diamond, the world's most famous stone. Originally stolen from a statue of an Indian Hindu goddess, the diamond brought misfortune to all who owned it. Winston bought the stone from Washington Socialite Evalyn Walsh McLean, and eventually donated it to the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, where you can visit it today. His reputation as King of Diamonds was cemented when Marilyn Monroe, starring in "Gentlemen Prefer Blonds" uttered the line "Talk to me, Harry Winston" in the song "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend." All this tradition and reputation was waiting for Miller when she moved to New York City after graduating from college.
