Purchasing meds online can make you sick

Remember in the old days when you had to go to the drug store or doctor's office to pick up that needed prescription - maybe it was a long drive, - and you felt lousy?

Then along came the Internet and the ability to purchase prescription drugs without getting out of that comfy chair or wasting gas driving in traffic.

But there are several things to keep in mind before purchasing prescription drugs on the Net.

Not all Web sites sell safe medicine, which poses a threat to your health and well being. In many cases, sorting out the good online operations from the bad can be tough, and so can telling the good pills from the bogus pills.

Fortunately, I'm here to hold your hand.

You're welcome, and donations are happily accepted.

Competitors force Blue Ridge Outdoors to take hike

Campers buying tents in the 1970s likely had a different shopping experience than those looking for them today.

Before the Internet and massive discount retailers, locally owned outdoors stores had the edge as prime places to buy hiking, camping and other outdoor supplies.

Today, bargains on outdoor gear abound online, from Internet retailers' Web sites to online auction business eBay. And a local outdoors retailer says it has fallen under the pressure of competing with this low-price-hunting game.

Blue Ridge Outdoors, founded in 1977, closed its Roanoke and Blacksburg stores this week. The stores at Valley View Mall in Roanoke and on North Main Street in downtown Blacksburg sold apparel, shoes and equipment for hikers, boaters and other outdoor enthusiasts.

Your Views: More on the US gun control debate

There has been considerable invective visited upon New Zealanders by American folk on this forum. Less than 10 per cent of Americans have passports. The majority of New Zealanders have travelled. We have a different perspective on world affairs because we are a small nation - and therefore tend look constantly beyond our own borders. What is out there is not pretty. Nor is a lot of what happens here. Insecurity and a questioning disposition tend to result in a more balanced world view. I am pleased that most of the world don't appear to know much about us including our location. Tragedy is part and parcel of everyone's life. It is not exclusive to Americans. This event was a tragedy - but has been blown totally out of perspective. For example more than 30,000 people in third world countries die from rabies every year vs one every two years in the USA.

Heard on the Street

The word about town is that a possible tenant, a large retailer, is closely eyeing the former Econofoods store in the Northwest Plaza near Wal-Mart North in Rochester. The cavernous building has been empty since Econofoods closed in June 2004. Nothing is signed yet.

Stay tuned to this column and to my blog, "Kiger's Notebook," which can be accessed from the homepage of www.postbulletin.com.

Child-care center open

Smiley's Childcare & Preschool was to open its doors today at 2130 S. Broadway in Rochester. That's the former City Kidz Academy south location. Owner Mary Martin says the center can care for 60 children ranging in age from six weeks to 11 years.

Martin has run a child-care center in Wisconsin for the past four years. Her strategy is to care for 2-year-olds in one section, 3-year-olds in another, followed by a preschool level.

You can throw a party and still be environmentally friendly

The spring soire: refined social tradition or toxic assault on the Earth? Sure, we adore pretty drinks and crostini, but consider the trash generated by many gatherings — the invitations, the plastic plates and cutlery, and the wine, beer and water bottles. Don't stop there — what about the pollution created by the jets that deliver our flowers, the trucks that ship our asparagus and the cars that transport our guests? Then there is the overfishing, overfarming and overgrazing. It's all so … overwhelming.

But don't cancel your bash just yet. Below, some of St. Louis' environmentally conscious hostesses share ways to throw a fabulous party without destroying resources.

"The first rule of being a great hostess is not to poison your guests," said Lucky You Productions party planner Rachel McCalla, with a laugh.

CHUD EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: WILL BEALL

Will Beall writes what he experiences and he talks the way he writes. He told me to ask him whatever I wanted and he gave me no BS and was honest about touchy subjects like racism in the LAPD and police corruption. His debut novel L.A. REX was a force to be reckoned with and I hope its just the start of a brilliant career for him. We talked about gangs, how he became a cop in one of the most dangerous areas of California and how his characters were created.

CHUD: Tell me a little bit about yourself.

Beall: I did 12 years of Catholic School, which is the best preparation for the LAPD you could ever imagine. My buddy Mahoney and I were probably the worst kids in St. Marys. Irishmen are pretty tight-lipped and Mahoneys the one who taught me to keep my mouth shut. Ive been interviewed by Internal Affairs a few times and - I shit you not - they use the same tactics those nuns tried on us.
