| Too dangerous for rats but good enough for Fido
Here's the thing pet lovers are missing about the Canadian company that sold the tainted food blamed for at least 14 dead pets: One: their products are still on store shelves across North America. Two: their profit line comes in part from a poison they import from China. The still-on-store-shelves update was announced on Saturday by on-the-ball www.Briebart.com. While it is true that Toronto-based Menu Foods has admitted it is worried customers will still find its products on store shelves, the multi-million dollar corporation is leaving it to individual store owners to remove its products, saying they should remove them no matter what the production date. "There is no known risk from items not listed on the recall list but an abundance of caution is called for in this situation.
Going for Google Apps
It is slowly catching on among some Asian organisations but it takes a change in mindset and habits, reports Victoria Ho. A Malaysian education council faced a number of obstacles when upgrading its IT infrastructure. Students at the 78 schools controlled by the council, Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan (SMJK), wanted a way to share documents, have personal school email accounts and be connected to the school system for homework updates. But funding was the biggest obstacle. Since the school group's IT relied on the charity of external parties and organisations, it was not about to upgrade its entire hardware architecture. In fact, Microsoft licences for its Office suite were beginning to be a problem, and the group turned to its open-source counterpart, Open Office, instead.

Community meetings to discuss city day cares (3:52 pm)
But city officials are hosting three community meetings beginning today to assure parents and staff that nothing has been decided as of yet, said Wayne Thornton, spokesman with the El Paso Parks and Recreation Department, which runs the daycares. Northeast resident Sabine Monk, 39, has a 5-year-old daughter in the daycare program at Veterans Recreation Center, 5301 Salem, and although her daughter will be attending kindergarten next year, she's concerned about the daycare's future. "Many families who have kids in there right now won't be able to afford it," Monk said. "They make too much money to qualify for Headstart, but they don't make enough money to pay $80 or $90 a week for private daycare." The city now charges $110 a month for four hours, and $190 a month for full-day daycare.

The increasing flow of sophisticated counterfeit goods means consumers need to be more alert than ever to ensure they are buying the real deal. According to the International Chamber of Commerce, counterfeiting accounts for at least US$500 billion annually in the global economy.
